About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant supports the CLIA lab operations with the receipt and preparation of biological samples for processing, order data entry into lab system, determination of specimen acceptance or rejection according to established standards, and performance of specimen investigation procedures when necessary. The Laboratory Assistant will also perform routine instrument maintenance procedures as needed, requisition organization and storage, and sample collection kit inventory management.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (AA) from a two-year college preferred, university; at least two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) preferred
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GMP) and Good Documentation Practice (GDP)
  • Proficient computer skills especially with Microsoft applications
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in a collaborative and team-oriented environment
  • Ability to manage and prioritize workload effectively
  • Ability to sit and/or stand and operate a computer with ability to multitask across many software communication and data entry programs while operating and communicating through telephone device for several hours a day.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Candidate must have ability to maintain punctual daily attendance.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prepare biological specimens to the laboratory to ensure accurate processing
  • Accession patient orders into the LIS
  • Verify patient demographic information matches test requisition forms submitted
  • Accept or rejects specimens according to established standards and performs specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance on some equipment as needed
  • Perform laboratory tasks of centrifuging specimens, printing extra labels, recording data (temperature charts) specimen storage and retrieval
  • Prepare specimens for analysis; aliquots, transports and distributes specimens
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the compliance policies related to test ordering, which requires developing ability to research test ordering information on translation tables, computer system, and the directory of services.
  • Complete all required written documentation, legibly and within the assigned timeframe
  • Maintain records in accordance with Good Documentation Practices and adhere to applicable archiving policies
  • Assist with sample collection kit inventory management
  • Meets or exceeds all performance expectations and demonstrates CDx values and behaviors through work performance and peer and team interaction
  • Assist with customer service and/or billing inquiries as needed
  • Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste
  • Comply with applicable environmental health and safety policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
