Requirements

  • Phlebotomist: CA
  • Fire Safety, within 90 Days

Nice To Haves

  • High School Graduate or GED
  • Associate Of Arts or Bachelors of Science Course work in college biology,chemistry or related studiespreferred. AA or BS
  • Certificate Other Completion of a phlebotomycertification program with required level of experience, or qualifications necessary to certify in phlebotomy
  • Previous experience in an acute care setting laboratory preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support for technical services in the laboratory performing procedures in one or more area of the laboratory including specimen collection and handling, clerical functions and technical duties under supervision of licensed staff.
  • Provides assistance for related tasks including stocking of supplies, cleaning of equipment, record handling and storage and other duties as assigned.
  • Performs duties in accordance with established department policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards under the supervision of licensed laboratory staff.
  • May perform simple laboratory procedures under supervision of licensed laboratory staff, assists in department functions and modalities as needed.
  • Participates in competency based orientation for new staff and annual competency challenges for all assigned departments.
  • Collects specimens, utilizing phlebotomy and skin puncture techniques using established laboratory procedures so that specimen quality and collection requirements are met.
  • Recognizes specimen requirements and procedures for neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Collects urine specimens and other types of laboratory specimens performing tasks associated with handling and specimen preparation for testing.
  • Collects specimens and laboratory requests from nursing units and other locations, accessioning them into the laboratory computer, processing them for testing or referred laboratory procedures.
  • Performs all labeling, documentation, and accessioning of specimens into the laboratory assuring accuracy and timeliness for routine, and priority test specimens.
  • Answers inquiries for results, stores and tracks laboratory records, maintains files and provides other support functions as needed.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares media, reagents or other materials used in department procedures.
  • Helps operate and maintain instrumentation and performs computer functions as directed.
  • Cleans glassware, surfaces and equipment using established department procedures.
  • Participates in educational programs, in-service and staff meetings as required.
  • May help orient new laboratory employees on department procedures.
  • Complete all annual CME requirements in a timely manner.
