This role is responsible for screening and accessioning specimens into LIS, reconciling specimen information, managing LIS work queues, quality control/audits, and coordinating specimen transport. The successful candidate will process all samples according to NYU policy and procedure.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • 0 to 6 months experience in laboratory
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent computer/data entry skills
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Accepts specimens from delivery person, window or pneumatic tube system.
  • Ensures log/manifest matches actual specimens received and signs off on all received specimens when required.
  • Verifies that each specimen is accompanied by LIS barcode label or demographic label and acceptable requisition.
  • Confirms each specimen is appropriate for the test requested.
  • Verifies that each specimen label is complete with name, medical record number and all required information as per standard operating procedure.
  • Verifies that the identifying information on the label matches that on the requisition and that the information on the requisition is complete and accurate.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel in cases of unacceptable samples (e.g., mislabeled, unlabeled, discrepant information) and documents according to department specific procedures.
  • Resolves problems with specimen receipt and appropriateness of test requisitions/samples when possible and according to SOP.
  • Timely processing of all samples.
  • Accessions (receives), sorts, racks, and distributes specimens according to established procedures, observing special comments and instructions.
  • Processes stats and specimens with time-sensitive protocols in a timely manner.
  • Notifies appropriate house staff and pathologists of frozen section cases.
  • Labels specimens with LIS labels correctly as required.
  • Delivers specimens and labels to the appropriate laboratory or instrument.
  • Registers patients and places orders based on manual requisitions or as corrective action for improperly placed orders entered by providers.
  • Answers telephones, provides customer service to Laboratory and Medical staff, converses courteously, and directs calls professionally.
  • Responds promptly to laboratory and medical staff who come to the laboratory.
  • Provides accurate information to inquiries from the medical staff.
  • Faxes results to physicians' offices or other institutions as per policy.
  • Responds promptly to requests from providers (e.g., STATs and Add On requests).
  • In the absence of customer service personnel, communicates critical values to provider as per policy.
  • Enters required pre-analytic information into the medical record at accessioning (source, volume, tube#, etc.).
  • Centrifugation of samples as required and placement on automated test platforms as per protocol.
  • May include removing caps from tubes of blood and body fluid.
  • Arrange courier pickups as needed (portal and/or phone).
  • Cleans all laboratory work surfaces and assigned areas in accordance with laboratory protocols and documents as required.
  • Maintains an organized workspace and restocks supplies as needed.
  • Notifies supervisor of any shortage of supplies.
  • Follows all safety requirements for PPE and the utilization of engineering controls to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Participates in the training of new lab accessioning staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Process and prepare patient specimens for referral to outside laboratories, ensuring accurate labeling, documentation, packaging, and shipping in compliance with laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Verify test orders, maintain specimen integrity and turnaround expectations, track send-out status and results, and communicate effectively with laboratory staff, couriers, and reference labs to resolve discrepancies.
