The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen receiving and processing duties, registers patients, enters orders in the computer system, centrifuges specimens, labels and aliquots samples, delivers to test site, stores samples, slides, blocks, etc. This role provides support in patient registration, third-party reimbursement requirements, and department supplies. The assistant demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection and handling, and performs departmental functions with a thorough understanding of hospital and laboratory information systems, including downtime procedures, specimen processing, transportation, billing, reference testing, and scheduling. They maintain positive customer service relationships, process pathology specimens, train staff as required, and can work flexible hours. The role also involves assisting with laboratory equipment maintenance and cleaning, adhering to regulatory policies, and maintaining regular attendance and compliance with hospital policies. Other responsibilities include active participation in the Quality Improvement Program, maximizing productivity, documenting specimen quality issues, adhering to infection control and safety practices, maintaining confidentiality, filing reports, assisting with charting and report distribution, understanding physician laboratory test orders, scheduling personnel as needed, assisting with bone marrow collection and processing, and potentially performing phlebotomy with approved competency.
