The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen receiving and processing duties, registers patients, enters orders in the computer system, centrifuges specimens, labels and aliquots samples, delivers to test site, stores samples, slides, blocks, etc. This role provides support in patient registration and third-party reimbursement, maintains department supplies, and demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection and handling. The assistant is responsible for performing all departmental functions, understanding hospital and laboratory information systems (including downtime procedures), specimen processing, transportation, billing, reference testing, and scheduling. They must maintain positive customer service relationships, process pathology specimens, train staff as required, and be able to work flexible hours. Excellent interpersonal skills are needed for cooperation with team members and responding to customer calls. Responsibilities also include assisting with laboratory equipment maintenance and cleaning, adhering to regulatory requirements, maintaining attendance, and complying with all policies and procedures. Other duties include active participation in the Quality Improvement Program, maximizing productivity, documenting specimen quality issues, adhering to infection control and safety practices, maintaining confidentiality, filing reports, assisting with charting and report distribution, understanding physician orders, scheduling staff, and assisting with bone marrow collection and processing. Phlebotomy may be performed if competency is approved.
