About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant I receives and correctly identifies patients, obtains blood and urine samples, prepares and packages specimens for transport, and performs clerical and registration functions. The position works under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Manager, and Lab Supervisor.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Depending on work location, a valid driver’s license may be required.

Nice To Haves

One year of phlebotomy or patient care experience.
Phlebotomy certification from an accredited program.

Responsibilities

Obtain blood specimens by capillary skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques and preserving specimen integrity for testing, including collection from neonates, pediatric and adolescent patients, adults, and geriatric patients.
Register patients and order tests as needed, following current procedures, including scanning scripts into the computer system daily.
Instruct patients in collecting urine, sputum, and stool specimens, and accept these specimens from patients.
Follow chain-of-custody specimen collection protocols and correct patient identification procedures.
Ensure specimen collection and labeling are complete and accurate.
Provide safe, effective, and efficient patient care in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Keep carts and phlebotomy areas adequately stocked, neat, and orderly; disinfect carts at the end of each shift.
Arrange workload to support optimal patient care and efficiency in phlebotomy and processing assignments.
When assigned, act as a responsible driver and follow all traffic laws.
Provide professional and courteous customer service to co-workers, providers, and patients, and remain calm in stressful situations.
Perform other duties as required.
