About The Position

The laboratories of IU Health offer some of the most comprehensive laboratory services in Indiana! Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the laboratories perform more than 19 million tests a year. In addition to IU Health, laboratory testing services are provided to hospitals and physicians across the country. The Laboratory Assistant I - Histology Prep, at Bloomington LAB, receives and accepts pathology specimens, checks ID, tracking forms, requisitions and specimen containers, accession and properly label specimen containers.

Requirements

• HS grad or GED Equivalent
• Ability to pay strong attention to detail
• Proven understanding of computers
• Telephone skills
• Skills to maintain cooperative working relationships within a confined work area
• Ability to work independently and efficiently
• Ability to plan and prioritize workload

Nice To Haves

• Interest in science
• Interpersonal skills (verbal and written); must be able to interact with Pathologists, Clinicians, Histotechs, and other staff related to specimen description and instructions

Responsibilities

• Receives and accepts pathology specimens
• Checks ID, tracking forms, requisitions and specimen containers
• Accessions and properly labels specimen containers
• Maintains safe work practices established by regulatory agencies, Hospital, Environmental Health & Safety, Departmental procedures, and policies and utilizes proper PPE (personal protective equipment)
• Provides a high level of customer service to the department’s clients including staff at all levels as well as other departments within the institution
• Discards medical and chemical waste following established protocols/procedure
