About The Position

THIS IS A TEMPORARY PRN POSITION-05/2026 TO 09/30/2026. The Laboratory Assistant 1 is responsible for being a positive and supportive team member, treating all customers professionally and courteously, and demonstrating a professional and caring attitude. This role requires compliance with all departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and regulations, including infection control, HIPPA, safety, and risk management. The assistant will interact with other departments, participate in process improvements, and attend staff meetings. Key duties include serving as a liaison between labs and nursing staff, stocking and ordering supplies, ensuring accurate patient demographics and test entries, providing specimen collection instructions, answering the phone, performing phlebotomy for all ages, preparing specimens for shipping, performing venipunctures and collecting blood cultures, collecting various samples (throat, nares, nasopharyngeal), starting tests for glucose tolerance tests, performing drug and breath alcohol screens, performing paternity collections, participating in proficiency testing, calling critical values, performing CLIA waived testing and quality control, packing/unpacking blood products, responding to emergencies (Code Blue, Traumas), using two patient identifiers, applying age-appropriate guidelines, performing daily Glucometer quality control, and disposing of sharps containers. The role also involves reconciling DTC reports and performing other assigned duties. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and breath alcohol test (if applicable).
  • Must complete an Employee Health meeting prior to starting employment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire).

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • One (1) year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between the clinic and hospital labs and as a reference for nursing staff.
  • Keep supplies stocked and ordered as needed.
  • Ensure accurate patient demographics and tests are entered in computer data base.
  • Provide necessary instructions to customers for specimen collection.
  • Answer telephone and assist caller as needed.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy skills for all ages using appropriate collection devices.
  • Prepare specimens to ship to reference labs.
  • Perform venipunctures and collect blood cultures.
  • Collect throat, nares, and nasopharyngeal samples.
  • Start tests and obtain specimens for glucose tolerance tests.
  • Perform drug and breath alcohol screens.
  • Perform paternity collections.
  • Participate in proficiency testing.
  • Call critical values per department policy.
  • Proficient in performing CLIA waived testing.
  • Proficient in performing quality control for CLIA waived testing.
  • Pack, unpack, and receive blood products.
  • Respond to Code Blue and Traumas.
  • Exhibit proper use of two patient identifiers.
  • Apply guidelines for age appropriate and patient mental status.
  • Perform quality control on Glucometer each day of use.
  • Dispose of and change sharps containers.
  • Reconcile DTC reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, maintaining adherence to departmental, hospital, state, and federal standards and policies.
  • Follow all infection control, safety, and risk management procedures to maintain a safe environment for patients, the public, and staff.
