About The Position

A Labor Supervisor provides direct supervision to a group of Laborers and Equipment Operators executing municipal solid waste collection, specifically overseeing daily route operations for small packer trash trucks servicing public space containers across the City of Alexandria. The position assigns, inspects, and evaluates crews in high-density commercial corridors and public spaces to maintain sanitation and visual standards. This role directly reports to a Superintendent, who establishes operational standards, service areas, and reviews overall collection performance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of experience as a laborer III or Equipment Operator
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s license (CDL), issued by the state of residence, with the proper endorsement for the vehicle being driven within six (6) months of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Two-Year College Degree with completion of college-level courses in environmental related studies; management studies
  • Certification or experience in heavy equipment maintenance and operation
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by your state of your residence.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and dispatch daily routes for small packer trucks dedicated to servicing public space trash and recycling containers throughout Alexandria.
  • Monitor field operations and conduct route inspections to ensure timely container servicing, litter mitigation, and adherence to departmental standards.
  • Actively manage route coverage during staffing shortages, including reassigning crews, consolidating paths, or directly driving and completing routes to maintain uninterrupted service levels.
  • Coordinate and schedule maintenance, emergency responses, and special events servicing with internal divisions—such as Street Maintenance and Street Cleaning—and external contractors.
  • Track daily service requests and public container maintenance needs using municipal fleet and workflow systems.
  • Provide technical guidance to crews regarding safe rear load small packer operation, tight-space maneuverability in urban corridors, and workplace safety protocols.
  • Gather operational data and report field metrics to support budget preparation and resource allocation.
  • Perform related work as required.
