Under the supervision of the nursing department's management, the RN assumes the responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed to deliver safe, evidence based care within their scope of practice. This role involves providing care to acutely and critically ill patients, in a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment. The RN will perform airway management, identify physical symptom changes and provide appropriate treatment, and demonstrate established techniques of safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids. They will develop and implement patient plans of care, observe outcomes, and demonstrate competency in various therapeutic/diagnostic interventions. The RN will promote, advocate, and collaborate to protect patient health, safety, and rights, and provide patient/family education. They will delegate to non-RN personnel, effectively use time, personnel, equipment, and supplies for high quality, cost-effective patient care, and manage resources and patient flow. The RN will use standards of care, hospital policies/procedures, and regulatory guidelines to guide practice, and function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams. They may also precept/mentor new staff or nursing students. The role requires seeking out learning opportunities, continuing education, and experiences that reflect current practice to maintain skills and competence. The RN will use current healthcare research findings to enhance clinical knowledge and role performance, maintain professional records, and adapt to rapidly changing technology. Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records, including ongoing status, interventions, patient response, and outcomes, is essential. The RN will use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making. They are expected to utilize initiative, maintain a steady level of productivity, be self-motivated, and organize and manage activities reflecting due consideration for the needs of the department and staff.
