About The Position

Under the general direction of the Section Supervisor and leadership staff, perform a variety of routine and complex laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease in a medical center caring for infants, children and adolescents. This role involves departmental support, technical skills and knowledge, customer service, professional development, and quality and accountability. The Lab Technologist will conduct, direct, or assist in special projects, evaluations, experiments, or research. They will participate in regularly scheduled cross-trained rotations and demonstrate continued competency in various sections of the Clinical Laboratory. Improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data, and providing input to department discussions are also key aspects of this role. The technologist will possess the appropriate skills and theory necessary to independently perform a variety of laboratory tests, operate instruments, perform checks, calibrations, preventative maintenance, and basic troubleshooting. They will also perform and report Quality Control Procedures, identify QC failures, prepare samples for analysis, prepare reagents, and assist with inventory management. Depending on location, registration and sample collection may be required. The role includes training bench personnel and students, functioning as a key operator for testing systems, and potentially serving as a superuser for the laboratory information system. Maintaining strong working relationships with clients and colleagues, responding to requests quickly and effectively, and identifying customer needs are crucial for customer service. Professional development includes maintaining licensure/certification through continuing education and implementing obtained knowledge into work. Quality and accountability involve performing accurate work, maintaining awareness of sectional needs, assuming responsibility for actions, and complying with policies, guidelines, and regulations. Participation in accreditation activities is also expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or biological science OR Associate's degree in related science
  • 2+ years of experience with Bachelor's degree
  • 4 years of experience with Associates degree
  • Any license, certification, or registration required

Responsibilities

  • Conduct, direct or assist in special projects, evaluations, experiments or research.
  • Participate in regularly schedule cross trained rotation and demonstrate continued competency in various sections of the Clinical Laboratory.
  • Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
  • Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency.
  • Possess the appropriate skills and theory necessary to independently perform a variety of laboratory tests.
  • Show competency of skills.
  • Operate instruments; perform checks, calibrations, preventative maintenance, basic troubleshooting from written guidelines.
  • Perform and report Quality Control Procedures.
  • Identify Q.C. failures and corrects malfunctions identified.
  • Prepare sample for analysis.
  • Store and preserve specimen.
  • Prepare reagents, assist with the monitoring supply inventories, receive and stock supplies.
  • Perform registration and sample collection as required by location.
  • Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data which will affect decisions regarding patient care.
  • Assists with development of new procedures and updating of existing procedures.
  • Train bench personnel and students in bench procedures once proficient in basic as well as some advanced skills.
  • Functions as a key operator for testing systems, coordinating activities of quality control, maintenance, and inventory management.
  • May serve as superuser for the laboratory information system.
  • Maintain/manage strong working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other key stakeholders.
