About The Position

West Coast Reduction Inc. is seeking a full-time Lab Technician for their Mt. Vernon facility. This role is responsible for accurately sampling and analyzing feedstocks from railcars and blended product tanks. The primary function is to operate and maintain a laboratory that ensures all materials handled at the Transload Facility meet or exceed customer specifications. West Coast Reduction collects food waste and by-products from various food producers and transforms them into ingredients for animal feed, renewable energy, and other products, contributing to a sustainable local food supply and cleaner communities. The company is a family-owned business with 7 plants across Western Canada and a new facility in Mount Vernon, WA.

Requirements

  • Experience operating an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) instrument and/or combustion sulfur/nitrogen analyzer
  • Experience working in an industrial laboratory setting, petroleum laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience performing routine maintenance and calibrating laboratory instruments
  • Experience implementing Statistical Quality Control plans to ensure continued optimal performance of instruments
  • Possession of a Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized post-secondary educational institution
  • Comprehensive understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Ability to climb to the top of railcars and storage tanks for sample collection
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, with excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with technology such as Microsoft Office Suite products and other software
  • Familiarity with the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) an asset
  • Ability to read or interpret diagrams, schematic drawings and manuals to determine work procedures
  • Ability to frequently move, carry, lift, push and pull equipment up to 50 lbs without assistance and occasionally greater with assistance
  • Perform repetitive motions including bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing and reaching overhead above the shoulders daily
  • Adaptable to adverse conditions including confined space, heights, cold weather, odours and animal by-products

Nice To Haves

  • Petroleum laboratory experience preferred
  • Familiarity with the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) an asset

Responsibilities

  • Draw and analyse samples of animal fats and vegetable oils from railcars and storage tanks
  • Draw and analyse samples from boilers
  • Operate and maintain a professional lab
  • Manage lab equipment inventory and issue resupply orders
  • Work with the Production department to perform non-routine testing as required
  • Perform shift work based on company business needs which evolve and change in response to customer demands
  • Work overtime as instructed to ensure minimal downtime of facilities
  • Adhere to the company Code of Conduct and all West Coast Reduction Inc. policies
