Mid-Level Lab Technician
About The Position
This position is the mid-skilled worker in the lab. Has successfully completed job training and has demonstrated ability to perform routine quality control testing. The duties require the ability to interpret results of testing for accuracy, credibility, compliance with specifications, etc. and to perform simple problem-solving tasks. This position works primarily in the laboratory areas. Requires good physical, visual and mental attention. On occasion special safety equipment may be required for entry into a hazardous manufacturing area. Waste Disposal: Isolation, remediation, containerizing RCRA hazardous waste generated in the assigned process area and under guidance of supervisory personnel.
Requirements
- High School equivalent education (GED).
- Some college level course and lab work in general and analytical and/or organic chemistry.
- Minimum of two (2) years in commercial laboratory performing physical testing, HPLC/GC chemical analysis and ICP nutrient analysis.
- Ability to perform higher level mathematical calculations.
- Good eye/hand coordination.
- A good understanding of chemistry concepts.
- Good communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
- Good understanding and ability to perform chemical analysis using HPLC and GC.
- Experience performing nutrient chemical analysis using ICP instrumentation.
- Knowledge of proper settings for GC/HPLC equipment.
- Ability to make mobile phase and internal standards for GC/HPLC.
- Ability to prepare samples for GC/HPLC analysis.
- Ability to replace gas or mobile phase for GC/HPLC.
- Know when and how to replace septum for GC/HPLC.
- Ability to replace broken or change GC/HPLC columns.
- Recognize a GC/HPLC system problem (pump, column, detector, etc.) and correct with minimal support from more senior technicians.
- Able to change out sample loops, columns, pumps and detectors for GC/HPLC.
- Knowledge of how to shut down and load methods in case of an emergency power outage for GC/HPLC.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of basic ICP operation including sample preparation and analysis.
- Two years of college chemistry or degree in related science field.
- Combination of education and experience will be considered.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine quality control testing.
- Interpret results of testing for accuracy, credibility, and compliance with specifications.
- Perform simple problem-solving tasks.
- Isolate, remediate, and containerize RCRA hazardous waste generated in the assigned process area under guidance of supervisory personnel.
- Perform various physical property analysis including: Analytical Gravimetric balance operation, Moisture analysis (Karl Fisher & Moisture balance), pH operation and calibration, Density measurement, Viscometer measurement, Particle Size analysis, Wet and Dry Screen analysis, Suspension and emulsion testing.
- Perform Gas Chromatography (GC) and Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) including: Basic operation & sample/standards preparation, Perform instrument maintenance as needed, Set-up instruments for new products/production campaigns, Shut down and load methods in case of an emergency power outage, Demonstrate knowledge of GC/HPLC theory & application including trouble shooting when a problem occurs.
- Recognize analysis problems and determine corrective/verification actions.
