About The Position

Performs, supervises and coordinates laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics of materials for quality production and environmental control. After completion of a successful training period, the technician should be able to perform all routine analysis and results reporting independently. This role involves operating and maintaining various laboratory equipment, preparing chemical solutions, and testing materials qualitatively and quantitatively. The technician will record test results, prepare reports, and issue instructions for in-process treatments. Environmental sample analysis and establishing formulations to meet specifications are also key responsibilities. The position may require assisting with coverage on additional shifts during critical times, with new hires starting in an 8-hour floating position and consideration given to existing technicians for available 12-hour positions.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft office suite.
  • 1-2 years equivalent experience in a Laboratory.
  • Completion of college basic chemistry and college algebra courses, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills; written and verbal.
  • Meet proficiency criteria.
  • (+12) credit hours of college chemistry courses, or equivalent experience.
  • (+6) credit hours of college math courses, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all routine analysis and results reporting independently after training.
  • Set-up, adjust, and operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as Arc-Spark Emission Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer, Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, Induction Furnace, pH meter, analytical balance, and other equipment.
  • Troubleshoot minor instrument and equipment errors.
  • Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas using proper techniques.
  • Prepare and make samples for testing.
  • Troubleshoot minor in-process production problems.
  • Test materials qualitatively and quantitatively (in-process material, slag, dross, raw materials, liquid effluents, off-gases) using spectrographic or chromatographic equipment and record results.
  • Test production samples of in-process and finished product to verify conformity to specifications/targets and record results.
  • Record results of finished product testing into the corporate SAP computer system.
  • Record test results on standardized forms and prepare test reports using MS Excel.
  • Issue instructions for in-process treatments to adjust chemical composition.
  • Test environmental samples to aid in the determination of the disposition of wastes/effluents.
  • Understand shipping requirements and notify Laboratory Supervisor of deficiencies.
  • Comply with all environmental, health, safety, quality systems, and housekeeping programs.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or authorized by laboratory management.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Follow written standard work instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform environmental sample analysis such as TCLP and test water samples for trace metals and pH.
  • Establish formulation required to meet specifications of materials in process, manufactured products and water and provide instructions of the formulation.
  • Assist in covering additional shifts at critical times.
