About The Position

A Lab Support Tech II performs a variety of laboratory support duties including specimen handling, data entry, equipment preparation, inventory management, and coordination with laboratory personnel and healthcare providers. This position may also assist with troubleshooting routine issues, training new staff, maintaining documentation, and ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience as a Lab Tech or Assistant in a Clinical Laboratory or 60 hours of completed higher education in a health sciences programs
  • Ability to follow oral instruction, read and write.
  • Computer/basic keyboard skills.
  • Telephone etiquette skills.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Receives specimens from all sources and verifies that each specimen has proper collection and labeling.
  • Verifies that each test is received in the correct tube type.
  • Sorts all specimens and place them in the proper racks to be received.
  • Loads racks on the appropriate automation line to be received in and tested.
  • Scans specimens into the EPIC system and re-labels the specimens as needed.
  • Enters orders into EPIC through requisition entry for all outside institutions.
  • Processes add-on tests.
  • Answers phone calls concerning results, faxing reports, specimen collection and ordering tests.
  • Processes timed urine specimens.
  • Reconciles packing lists.
  • Processes Reference, VA and ACH specimens as needed.
  • Processes mail-in specimens.
  • Scans requisitions received with labs from institutional accounts into EPIC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assures that all tasks are completed for shift.
  • Assigns tasks as needed.
  • Ensures all policies and procedures are followed.
  • Addresses all patient/specimen problems as needed.
  • Consults with the Laboratory Supervisor or Pathologist for guidance when handling problem situations.
  • Fills out all Safety Intelligence reports and delivers to the Core Lab Manager.
  • Communicates all pertinent information to the oncoming senior tech and Supervisor.
  • Assists with training new LSTs including signing off on competencies.
