About The Position

This position is primarily Monday–Friday, with occasional weekend coverage required to support staffing and operational needs. The Lab Supervisor Technical Operations is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department, providing work direction, expertise, and guidance to the staff. This role oversees clinical laboratory testing, evaluation of results, and proficiency of testing. The supervisor actively participates in projects to meet strategic initiatives, including the implementation and development of quantitative outcomes, and monitors budget compliance. They analyze laboratory fiscal needs and departmental performance, taking action to address variances. Collaboration and implementation of performance improvement processes to optimize teammate engagement, and physician and patient satisfaction are key. The role ensures quality, regulatory, accreditation, compliance, and competency standards are met, along with compliance with current policies, procedures, and standardization/consolidation decisions. Coordination of orientation, training, and competency testing of staff and/or students is also a responsibility. The supervisor maintains competency in test systems and processes within their defined discipline and serves as a technical resource for staff. Compliance with the quality plan by implementing and monitoring quality indicators, reviewing laboratory results for quality, accuracy, and validity, and documenting/implementing corrective actions are essential. This role involves selecting, coaching, and developing the team, setting clear expectations, managing performance, and making recommendations for hiring, compensation, promotions, corrective actions, and terminations. The supervisor is responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and ensuring compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws.

Requirements

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC), or Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent accrediting agency.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology or equivalent
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in technical laboratory services and operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including project management, decision making, delegation, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to grow leaders through coaching, guidance, and development planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance, accrediting and licensing agency requirements.
  • Current knowledge of medical and technical advancements to plan for future growth and development.
  • Intermediate computer skills including knowledge and experience with laboratory information systems.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, twist and bend the majority of the workday.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and/or infectious agents.
  • Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.
  • Must wear appropriate safety protection, i.e. laboratory coats, gloves, gowns and/or eye protection.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • May be required to travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
