About The Position

This position is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of staff, laboratory testing, and workflow in the assigned laboratory section. The Lab Supervisor ensures that laboratory results are produced in accordance with established procedures, coordinates communication of technical and result issues to lab management, and provides advanced technical support. They are an active participant in quality assurance management and procedure review, ensuring compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies. The role also involves managing staff, including recommendations for hiring, promotions, and discipline, as well as coordinating scheduling and coverage needs across all campus laboratory locations. The supervisor makes recommendations for capital purchases and budget considerations, ensuring decisions align with financial goals. They are responsible for writing, editing, and organizing procedures, and ensuring all periodic instrument maintenance is performed. Additionally, the position serves as a resource for advanced instrument repair/troubleshooting, provides guidance on complex test results, and facilitates validation studies for new equipment and assays. Staff training plans for new equipment and assays are also developed. The role requires ensuring all proficiency testing is performed according to established procedures and leading investigations into any exceptions. Standard supervisor responsibilities include performance evaluations, orientation, and training. The supervisor fosters teamwork, motivation, and integrates diversity into departmental objectives. They participate in performance improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies like Joint Commission and DPH. The role also ensures adequate equipment and supplies, and develops departmental policies and procedures. The Lab Supervisor is an essential employee and may be required to report to work during inclement weather or emergency events. Key responsibilities include supervising day-to-day operations of lab central processing, ensuring accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, handling, prioritization, and distribution. They oversee lab customer service functions, promoting exceptional service and timely issue resolution. The role ensures expected courier operations are met, including communication related to route optimization and specimen transport. Oversight of the core lab temperature monitoring system and environmental compliance programs is also included. The supervisor leads and ensures supplies are received, inspected, documented, and distributed in a timely manner, and may assist with laboratory inventory management. The position supports off-shift, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage as required to maintain continuous operational coverage and provides flexibility in scheduled work hours and assignments to meet departmental needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree of science from an accredited college/university with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, or Biological Science or chemistry, or Bachelor’s degree with Major with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry and math, or Official evaluation report for non-US college/university transcript.
  • National certification as a generalist Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist, categorical in the specialty of the operation, or Specialist: Examples: ASCP Technologist/Scientist Certification: Blood Bank (BB), Chemistry (C), Cytogenetics (CG), Cytologist (CT), Hematology (H), Histotechnologist (HLT), Microbiology (M), Molecular Biology (MB), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).ASCP Specialist Certification: Blood Bank (SBB), Chemistry (SC), Cytology (SCT), Cytometry (SCYM), Hematology (SH), Microbiology (SM), Molecular Biology (SMB).ASCP Technician: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), Histotechnician (HT) ABHI Specialist Certification: CHT (ABHI) or CHS(ABHI).
  • Must qualify as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations where required.
  • 5 years clinical or anatomic laboratory experience.
  • 1 year of experience in a clinical or anatomic leadership role.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, i.e., statistics, QC/proficiency testing, and analytic root cause analysis.
  • Must possess the interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) needed to provide effective participative leadership and for successful communication with all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft products.

Responsibilities

  • Make recommendations for capital purchases, staff and /or process changes to be included in the budget consideration process.
  • Ensures day-to-day decisions are consistent with the laboratory’s financial goals and objectives.
  • Writes, edits, and organizes new and existing procedures.
  • Takes an active role in the procedure review process to ensure they remain consistent with laboratory practices.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Ensures all periodic instrument maintenance is performed.
  • Serves as a laboratory resource for advanced instrument repair/troubleshooting.
  • Provides guidance and appropriate follow-through to other staff members for complex or unusual test results.
  • Facilitates completion of validation studies for new equipment/assays.

  • May assist with laboratory inventory management, including supply utilization analysis, par level, stock rotation, ordering, and other duties as required.
