Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external laboratory customers
• Knowledge of computer data entry
• Good telephone communication skills
• Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling
• Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow
• Good decision-making skills
• Detail oriented
• Able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner
• Less than one year healthcare environment experience

Nice To Haves

• Certification from medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program
• Phlebotomy with specific experience in hospital and geriatric environment
• Specimen processing
• Experience using a Laboratory Information system for accessioning and specimen tracking

Responsibilities

• Perform various laboratory functions that include full and contract registration, phlebotomy, specimen processing and clerical duties that ensure proper registration, billing, collection, accessioning and preparation of laboratory specimen
• Load specimens onto Automated Line and trouble shoots when alarms are active
• Accept and prioritize specimens that arrive at specimen drop off
• Answer incoming telephone calls and practice excellent customer service
• Work the follow up lists for the department and maintains logs as necessary
• Prepare specimens for reference labs and work send out bench when assigned
• Work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed, based on the department needs and within the scope of practice
• Registration and disposition of patients of all age groups
