About The Position

The Lab Representative performs various laboratory functions including full and contract registration, phlebotomy, specimen processing, and clerical duties to ensure proper registration, billing, collection, accessioning, and preparation of laboratory specimens. This role involves loading specimens onto an Automated Line and troubleshooting alarms when active. The representative accepts and prioritizes specimens that arrive at specimen drop-off, answers incoming telephone calls, and practices excellent customer service. Additional responsibilities include working the follow-up lists for the department, maintaining necessary logs, preparing specimens for reference labs, and working the send-out bench when assigned. The position may require working from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or floating between different lab departments as needed, based on departmental requirements and within the scope of practice. The role serves patients of all age groups.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external laboratory customers.
  • Knowledge of computer data entry.
  • Good telephone communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow.
  • Good decision-making skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Less than one year healthcare environment experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program.
  • Phlebotomy with specific experience in hospital and geriatric environment.
  • Specimen processing experience.
  • Experience using a Laboratory Information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.
  • Registration and disposition of patients experience.
