About The Position

The Lab/Rad Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a smooth and efficient workflow in the Radiology and Laboratory Departments. This role involves establishing staffing needs, responding to workload changes, and troubleshooting technical questions and equipment issues. The coordinator also manages equipment service, inspections, and coordinates the purchase of supplies and equipment. They evaluate new medical imaging equipment, oversee x-ray staff to ensure patient flow and adherence to protocols, and provide in-service education on radiation safety and imaging procedures. Additionally, the role involves supervising radiography students, implementing radiation safety measures, evaluating image quality, and monitoring quality assurance programs. The coordinator must have a full working knowledge of PACS, assign imaging studies, and ensure staff maintain necessary licensures and certifications. This position requires after-hours responsibilities and expertise in phlebotomy, central processing, and customer service. The coordinator supervises phlebotomy staff, ensures training and competency, and provides feedback for performance evaluations. They also interact with various departments and manage the blood glucose interface and phlebotomy inventory.

Requirements

  • Three years minimum experience in phlebotomy, customer service specialist and central processing roles of the laboratory.
  • Graduate of an accredited radiography program.
  • Two years’ experience as a technologist required.
  • Phlebotomy Certification required or 5 years of phlebotomy experience in lieu of certification.
  • ARRT registration in radiography required.
  • IEMA-DNS radiography accreditation required if working in Illinois.
  • WI-DSPS radiographer license required if working in Wisconsin.
  • CPR required.
  • Passing the Driver’s License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).
  • Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.
  • Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Attend LDA within 2 years.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains smooth and efficient workflow in the Radiology and Laboratory Departments by establishing staffing needs and responding to changing workload requirements.
  • Responds to technical questions, concerns, and problems from Laboratory/Radiology and other Mercyhealth staff, including physicians.
  • Coordinates departmental equipment service and inspections to assure regulatory compliance and optimal operations.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and obtains appropriate repair services.
  • Helps coordinate purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Evaluates new medical imaging equipment and recommends purchase of capital equipment.
  • Oversees x-ray staff in the operation of imaging equipment, in order to maintain patient flow, achieve production goals, and conform to established protocols and procedures.
  • Demonstrates new techniques, equipment, and procedures to staff.
  • Assigns, schedules staff to meet the needs of the department and to meet productivity standards.
  • Interviews, hires and oversees orientation of new partners.
  • Offers in-service education to other departments and medical staff in radiation safety and various radiologic and imaging procedures.
  • Supervises radiography students.
  • Implements and monitors radiation safety measures to ensure safety of patients and staff and compliance with government regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluates the accuracy and quality of images, and provides technical assistance to staff necessary at all clinic locations that offer imaging in Illinois.
  • Confers with medical staff and technologists concerning medical imaging techniques and procedures.
  • Monitors quality assurance program to conform to federal, state, local, and facility regulations and guidelines.
  • Utilizes appropriate scripting, barriers and patient identifiers.
  • Reviews current literature and attends meetings and seminars to keep informed of new developments in field.
  • Assigns imaging studies to non-radiologists when appropriate.
  • Insures that radiology and laboratory staff working at IL clinics maintain their licensures, certifications and CPR.
  • Follows Leadership’s guidelines on Critical Moments of Service and insures staff follow the guidelines.
  • Participates in radiology QA to include performance improvement initiatives and departmental dashboards as well as Mercyhealth System’s performance improvement initiatives and dashboards.
  • Accepts responsibility for equipment service failures as well as unplanned staffing needs.
  • Exhibits expertise in all aspects of phlebotomy central processing workflow.
  • Exhibits expertise in all aspects of customer service specialist role.
  • Supervises phlebotomy partners, performs and assures training is completed and competency checklists are completed for phlebotomy staff.
  • Provides feedback for radiology and laboratory IL clinic partners’ performance evaluations.
  • Interacts with Nursing, Emergency, Outpatient and Occ Med departments as needed.
  • Management of blood glucose interface including troubleshooting blood glucose interface and blood glucose instruments as necessary.
  • Manages phlebotomy/central processing inventory.
