The Lab Processing Tech I is responsible for specimen receiving, processing, transport, delivery, distribution, and storage. This role prepares specimens for diagnostic and prognostic analyses and testing, and delivers them to testing areas as needed. The Tech I operates various manual and automated laboratory and office equipment, performs order entry, troubleshooting, and retrieves and verifies patient collection data and special notations using laboratory and electronic health systems. Maintaining positive patient identification is crucial throughout all processes. The role involves resolving pre-analytic specimen-related issues according to SOPs, and potentially processing, preparing, and shipping specimens to internal and external labs, as well as preparing and shipping mail-out kits. Additional duties may include reagent preparation and handling, assisting with supply inventory and stocking, operating automated systems, training others, clerical tasks, receiving shipments, and cleaning. Strict adherence to safety requirements for laboratory protocols and handling hazardous materials is mandatory. The position also involves assisting with consultant specimen retrieval, responding to a high volume of phone calls for laboratory testing/order information or add-ons, and participating in quality or lab projects. The individual must perform duties ethically, demonstrate professional communication skills, and utilize multiple computer systems. Confidentiality, trustworthiness, and the ability to handle stressful situations are essential. The Tech I is an integral part of the laboratory team, supporting patient testing in a fast-paced environment, requiring prioritization, independence, and attention to detail. This role works with minimal supervision.
