About The Position

A medical technologist performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols which require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Procedures are performed in the hematology, Immunohematalogy, immunology, urinalysis, chemistry and microbiology areas, including collection of specimens where required. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Science
  • National certification ASCP or AMA, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • good critical thinking skills

Responsibilities

  • Follows established procedures for collection and processing biological specimens for analysis.
  • Evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  • Performs assigned analytical tests or procedures that requires the broad exercise of independent judgment with minimal supervision.
  • Answers questions regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, sensitivity, and specific factors that can influence test results.
  • Recognizes factors that affect measurement and results and take appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
  • Recognizes abnormal results and refer them to the appropriate personnel according to the critical limit notification policy.
  • Operates instruments within the scope of training, utilizing established protocols and quality control checks.
  • Maintains equipment and corresponding records.
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action to correct the malfunction.
  • Communicates information such as test results, reference ranges and specimen requirements to appropriate staff.
  • Performs routine quality control and maintain accurate records.
  • Determines action needed when quality control results are not within acceptable limits.
  • Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to new employees and students.
  • Accepts responsibility for the student's training as assigned.
  • Provides general supervision to clinical laboratory assistants for the proper performance and test results of high complexity procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physiological, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of patients.
  • Attends laboratory and/or organizational meetings and in-services to allow for effective communication and training.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of personnel, equipment, space, method comparison, cost analysis, and establishment of reference intervals.
  • Writes and revises technical procedures.
  • Provides training to appropriate personnel for new procedures.
