The Lab Customer Support understands and applies knowledge of specimen requirements when receiving specimens. Prepares specimens for testing as applicable. This can include: receiving, labeling centrifuging and plating. Answers telephone calls and assists caller with any questions or concerns regarding specimen collection. Adheres to laboratory and safety polices including compliance with all safety , accreditation and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Less than one year healthcare environment experience
  • Ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external laboratory customers.
  • Requires knowledge of computer data entry.
  • Must possess good telephone communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow.
  • Requires good decision-making skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program.
  • Phlebotomy with specific experience in hospital and geriatric environment.
  • Specimen processing.
  • Experience using a Laboratory Information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.
  • Registration and disposition of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and accurately processes all specimen types for Clinical and Anatomical Pathology (AP). Receives specimens from ED. Performs add-on procedures in a timely manner. Able to cancel, reorder specimens or move Container Identification System (CIDS) on all types of specimens when necessary. Able to reprint barcode labels. Transports specimens within the lab when assigned. (20%)
  • Able to receive and process Outreach specimens of all types. (15%)
  • Able to accurately register specimens for outreach, research accounts, submitters and contract (10%)
  • Able to work follow-up lists and properly document on department logs as needed. (10%)
  • Able to operate and load the Automated Line and troubleshoot the alarms. Able to retrieve specimens from specimen storage. (15%)
  • Prepare specimens for testing to include proper patient identification, centrifugation when appropriate and distribute to correct testing area or storage location. Assist in various preparatory techniques throughout the laboratory as assigned. May prepare specimens for transport to reference laboratory or other hospitals. Know how to follow up for timely results. Works send out benches for reference labs. Prints incomplete lists to ensure test completion or specimen retention. (20%)
  • Follows PPE procedures and all safety protocol for specimens. Is familiar with special handling protocols. (5%)
  • Receives specimens properly from Drop off window and handle Priority specimens appropriately. (5%)
  • May assist in the training of new employees.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete mandatory training.
  • Adhere to dress code, core values, policies and procedures, time & attendance guidelines and confidentiality agreement.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by management within job specifications.
