About The Position

The Chemistry Department is looking to hire a full-time Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator. This role is responsible for preparing chemical reagents and laboratory materials for labs and practical exams, maintaining stock supplies and equipment, managing inventory, and overseeing the disposal of chemistry lab waste. The coordinator will also supervise student workers and collaborate with faculty to update procedures and support new experiments. This position allows faculty to focus on instruction by handling day-to-day operational duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field with at least 20 hours in chemistry.
  • Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office including word processing, spreadsheet and databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Experience handling chemicals in a laboratory setting or relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare chemical reagents and laboratory materials for each lab and all lab practical exams for all courses, including Principles of Chemistry, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
  • Communicate regularly with faculty, the Chair of Chemistry and the Dean of Science.
  • Maintain adequate stock supplies, submit orders, and keep computer database of purchases.
  • Maintain equipment in operational condition.
  • Maintain chemical and equipment inventory.
  • Keep lab areas clean and organized.
  • Supervise federal work study and part-time lab aides.
  • Manage inventory and sale of used lab coats and goggles.
  • Manage and prepare chemistry lab waste for storage and disposal.
  • Handle all day-to-day operational duties, allowing faculty to focus on instruction.
  • Collaborate with faculty to update procedures and support new experiments.
  • Set up lab materials for lab exercises, lab review days, and lab exams, ensuring adequate supplies are available for all labs.
  • Apply chemical laboratory expertise to assess the needs of each experiment and ensure the team prepares reagents and materials for more than 85 laboratory sections each year.
  • Conduct strategic planning for the department and develop and implement standard operating procedures for day-to-day activities.
  • Assist faculty with instruction in the chemistry laboratories and classrooms.
  • Monitor and answer student questions during review days, suggest changes to alter and enhance lab exercises to improve student outcomes, communicate lab exercise schedules and room schedules to faculty, and send weekly emails to faculty regarding lab procedures and any safety concerns.
  • Supervise student workers and give directions to Lab Aides and Lab Technicians.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and approve timesheets for student employees and provide continued support toward mastery of the position.
  • Evaluate, service, and maintain small instruments and all laboratory equipment.
  • Provide guidance to the lab team responsible for maintaining calibration, operability, and cleanliness of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot all errors and malfunctions.
  • Coordinate and/or perform equipment service, repair, or replacement as needed.
  • Conduct planning to evaluate and prioritize current and future needs for the procurement of consumable supplies, chemical reagents, and durable equipment to meet all department objectives in adherence to the established budget.
  • Manage all aspects of chemical, microscope, and supply purchasing.
  • Track, maintain, and update the inventory of microscopes, equipment, chemicals, and solutions.
  • Maintain safety certification and oversee the safe storage of chemicals and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Serve on the Science Division Safety Committee.
  • Complete annual hazardous waste training.
  • Assess and maintain safety equipment, including eye washes, safety showers, and spill kits, to ensure operability and suitability to activities performed in the lab in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate the sale of used lab coats and goggles and conduct a variety of marketing duties for the department.
