About The Position

This is a full-time, PM/Second Shift position for a Lab/Clinic Team Leader. The role involves collecting patient specimens, utilizing the Information System for various tasks, ensuring specimen accuracy and quality, performing waived, moderate, and high complexity lab tests, analyzing test results, troubleshooting testing methodologies, implementing corrective actions, meeting turnaround times, reporting critical results, performing quality control and proficiency testing, interpreting and troubleshooting quality control results, performing instrument maintenance and calibration, evaluating and implementing new methods and instruments, investigating technical issues, participating in interdepartmental committees, teaching students, and training new partners. The Team Leader also reviews quality control results, submits data, administers proficiency testing, develops training protocols, ensures competency checklists are completed, prepares performance evaluations, evaluates new methods/procedures/equipment, ensures regulatory compliance, represents the lab during surveys, serves as a technical resource, maintains inventory, recommends capital purchases, stays current with industry changes, maintains competency, and demonstrates leadership qualities. In the absence of the General Supervisor, the Team Leader acts as the General Supervisor, handling scheduling, supply ordering, and problem resolution. The role involves taking ownership of the department, identifying areas for improvement, and making suggestions to the General Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in a laboratory setting
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science preferred
  • MLT/AMT Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collect patient specimens
  • Utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, test results, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports
  • Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing analyses; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable
  • Documents information concerning quality of specimen, impact of sub-optimal specimens on test values
  • Initiates recollection procedure as indicated
  • Perform waived and moderate and high complexity lab tests as defined by CLIA 42CFR493
  • Analyze test results prior to release of information to chart for validity and accuracy
  • Recognizes subtle yet significant problems which occur with testing methodologies
  • Troubleshoots suspect test results using technical knowledge and experience
  • Implements corrective action when inaccurate, inappropriate findings/results/reports are identified
  • Assure that designated turnaround times for results are met and that critical results are appropriately reported and documented
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policy
  • Interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results
  • Perform preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting and calibration of laboratory instrumentation
  • Performs method and instrument evaluation and implementation
  • Investigates/resolves technical issues
  • Participates on interdepartmental committees or teams
  • Teaches students and trains new partners
  • Reviews quality control results, submits data to peer review organization and makes necessary adjustments for area of specialty
  • Assures enrollment in appropriate proficiency testing programs, administrates proficiency testing program according to regulatory standards and assures acceptable performance
  • Develops effective orientation checklists and training protocols for partners
  • Assures initial and annual tech competency checklists are completed according to policy
  • Prepares and delivers partner performance evaluations and skill/competency checklist
  • Evaluates new methods, procedures and equipment
  • Assures compliance with regulatory standards and represents lab during accreditation surveys
  • Serves as a technical resource to medical staff, system laboratories and other departments
  • Maintains appropriate supply level of inventory to assure smooth operation of department
  • Recommends capital purchases during budget process including quotations and rationale for purchase
  • Keeps current with developing technology and changes in the laboratory industry
  • Maintain competency in current procedures and gain competency for new methods implemented
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities that include directing the flow of work, sound and accurate judgment in problem resolution, and the ability to provide constructive criticism that results in improved workflow
  • Acts as a General Supervisor in the absence of the General Supervisor to include scheduling, ordering supplies and problem resolution for issues that cannot wait until the technical consultant returns
  • Takes ownership of the department; Identifies areas for improvement and makes suggestions to General Supervisor; Possesses ability to resolve issues
