About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for providing support to licensed testing personnel as described in California Business Code 1269 regulations by assisting them with specimen management, certain pre-analytical and analytical processes, clerical functions, inventory control, and general lab upkeep. The Laboratory Assistant, under the supervision and direction of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist and the department General Supervisor, performs test processing in certain areas of the laboratory.

Requirements

  • Minimum - High School Diploma
  • Must have fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing, and good visual acuity with ability to distinguish major colors.
  • Must be able to move readily from one location to another within the laboratory.
  • Minimum lifting is generally not more than 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Adhering to the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing.
  • Logging and distributing patient samples from the processing areas to the respective testing areas.
  • Process and prepare patient samples prior to the analytical phase, which includes, but not limited to, whole blood, serum/plasma, dried blood, dried serum/plasma, urine, saliva, etc.
  • Loading samples onto an automated analyzer.
  • Responsible for performance and adherence to relevant SOPs.
  • Perform necessary maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.) on instrumentation, small lab equipment, and general lab cleanliness and meet laboratory documentation requirements.
  • Assist with proper labeling of reagents, calibrators, and QC.
  • Assist with monitoring supplies and inventory in the pre-analytical process.
  • Dispose of specimens and materials after the analytical phase in accordance with safety and general testing SOP requirements.
  • Properly storing/exit scanning samples in accordance with SOP requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workspace.
  • Continuously look for areas of improvement in workflow processes and suggest/recommend improvements to the General Supervisor.
  • Follow all laboratory safety requirements and report any possible hazards to the General Supervisor.
  • Shares appropriate communication with other laboratory personnel in daily huddles and throughout the work shift.
  • Assist Accessioning department as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
