The Lab Assistant I performs positive patient identification, receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system, and conducts patient/client registration as necessary. They make determinations for specimen collection containers and volumes based on patient weight and performing laboratory. They maintain specimen integrity during specimen transport and processing of samples received in the laboratory. They communicate specimen issues to caregivers. They provide customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. They perform other clerical or clinical duties as required by the area of service. Patients served at Cook Children's range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. All Laboratory personnel are required to follow Cook Children's Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance, as outlined by the OIG and HCFA is an important aspect of our laboratory's environment, and each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of, and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Cook Children's Compliance Plans. These job functions are performed with a professional, courteous and knowledgeable manner towards physicians, management, nurses, co-workers, and other customers of Cook Children's Healthcare System.
