About The Position

The supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of laboratory support staff within the laboratory department. This role ensures timely specimen collection, processing, transport, and data entry while upholding quality, safety, and regulatory standards. The Supervisor collaborates with clinical teams and laboratory technologists to ensure efficient, accurate, and patient-centered laboratory services.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Lab Assistant License with Nevada Division of Public Health required.
  • American Heart Association BLS required.
  • Five years of experience as a lab assistant, phlebotomist, or related role in a hospital or clinical lab setting.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Joint Commission, and infection control regulations.
  • Ability to mentor, guide, and resolve conflicts with professionalism.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
  • Detail-oriented and well organized.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology, healthcare, or related field preferred.
  • Three years of leadership, supervisory, or lead technician experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise a team of laboratory assistants in a 24/7 hospital setting.
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of lab assistants, including assigning work and maintaining schedules.
  • Monitor task completion to maintain efficient lab support operations.
  • Oversee proper collection, labeling, and transport of patient specimens (including STAT and critical specimens) and specimens that are performed per protocol.
  • Resolve workflow issues and escalate concerns to the Laboratory Manager when necessary.
  • Ensure proper documentation of quality control and maintenance logs.
  • Fill in for lab assistants when needed during staffing shortages.
  • Serve as a resource to staff for troubleshooting routine problems in phlebotomy and specimen handling.
  • Ensure prompt handling of laboratory samples in accordance with hospital and regulatory policies (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA).
  • Onboard and train new lab assistants; ensure ongoing competency and performance evaluations.
  • Lead or participate in continuing education and cross-training initiatives to enhance staff skills and adaptability.
  • Monitor and document adherence to infection control, patient identification, and specimen handling protocols.
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives, safety audits, and readiness for inspections/accreditation reviews.
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with lab leadership.
  • Maintain inventory of lab and office supplies and equipment.
  • Request and obtain approval from the Lab Manager or Director.
  • Investigate and resolve operational issues related to workflow, specimen tracking, or staff concerns and notify the lab manager of any issues and concerns.
  • Provide coverage for lab assistants during peak times or staffing shortages.
  • Assumes all other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as a point of contact between lab assistants, nursing staff, and clinical departments for service coordination.
  • Attend interdisciplinary meetings as requested by the Lab Manager to support continuous improvement in lab service delivery.
