About The Position

The laboratory assistant role involves receiving, verifying, processing, and storing biological specimens such as blood and urine. This position also includes performing clerical duties, pre-analytic processing, maintaining supply inventory, filing, stocking, receiving shipments, cleaning, and utilizing various computer information systems daily. This vacancy is not eligible for sponsorship, visa transfers, or F-1 STEM OPT extension. Employees hired for this position must complete 2 years in the role before becoming eligible to transfer to other positions within Mayo Clinic.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Must be organized, able to prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents and infectious agents.
  • Foreign trained lab personnel to provide a detailed equivalency High School evaluation to include US equivalent degree at the applicant's expense.
  • DLMP employees that have been in their current lab/position less than 2 years must attach early release approval from their supervisor.
  • Non-DLMP internal applicants that have been in their current department/position for less than one year must attach early release approval from the supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of laboratory functions, medical terminology, a background in science and 1-2 years medical experience is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding, telephone operations and other office equipment desired.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for biological specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, and storage.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and pre-analytic processing duties.
  • Maintain supply inventory.
  • Filing, stocking, and receiving shipments.
  • Cleaning laboratory areas.
  • Work with various computer information systems on a daily basis.
