Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist (Per Diem)
About The Position
Under the general guidance of the Laboratory Medical Director and/or the Laboratory Manager, this position will support the Clinical Laboratory. Key responsibilities include performing venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all age groups, accurately labeling specimens, processing specimens, centrifuging samples, distributing specimens, and preparing patient samples for external reference laboratories. The role also involves ensuring accurate specimen collection, handling, and shipping requirements are met. Additionally, the position assists in monitoring laboratory turnaround times using hospital and reference laboratory computer systems, performing CLIA waived testing, and assisting Laboratory Scientists with loading automated analyzers, specimen management, and result monitoring.
Requirements
- Active California Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) 1 or 2 Certification
- BLS Certification within 3 months of hire
- General computer and data entry experience
Nice To Haves
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
- 6 months phlebotomy experience with all age groups
- Previous hospital laboratory experience
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and skin puncture on neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Withdraw blood for various test procedures.
- Label specimens accurately in the presence of the patient.
- Perform specimen processing, centrifuge samples, and distribute specimens to the appropriate testing area.
- Prepare patient samples to be sent out to the reference laboratory, ensuring accurate specimen collection, handling, and shipping requirements are met.
- Assist with monitoring laboratory turnaround times using hospital computer system and reference laboratory computer system.
- Perform CLIA waived testing in the laboratory.
- Assist Laboratory Scientists with loading automated analyzers, specimen management, and monitoring result completion.
