About The Position

Lab Assistant is responsible for performing phlebotomy, point of care testing and patient registration for Outreach clients. This is a Part-Time position requiring 28 hours a week, with work locations in Effingham and Altamont. A High School diploma is required, and BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire. The starting pay is based on experience, beginning at $16.94 an hour, with a $500 sign-on bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Audits charts at client sites to ensure that all provider ordered tests are completed at the scheduled times.
  • Ensures that all ordered tests have completed results on the patient’s chart.
  • Collects throat, nasal, and nasopharyngeal swabs using appropriate procedures and supplies.
  • Collects urine and/or alcohol for non-chain-of-custody drug screen testing.
  • Labels tubes/containers; may package specimens for courier pick-up.
  • Maintains good client relations with patients and staff at long term care facilities or provider office.
  • Maintains records of the patients and clients served.
  • Maintains work areas in a neat and orderly fashion; cleans, decontaminates counters and drawing stations on every shift, and empties sharps disposal containers.
  • Obtains diagnosis information from the provider for each test ordered and documents on lab order.
  • Performs and documents point of care test quality control as appropriate and performs patient point of care testing.
  • Performs maintenance and daily cleaning on centrifuges.
  • Performs phlebotomy techniques – via venipuncture and capillary puncture – using appropriate procedures and supplies including site selection, order of draw, and test requirements.
  • Reads and documents daily temperature logs.
  • Registers patients and orders tests in the Laboratory Information System(s).
  • Schedules tests to be drawn and completed.
  • Takes inventory and restocks supplies.
  • Utilizes safety tools for patient identification and specimen labeling, including verbal interaction with patients/family and/or staff (provider offices and long-term care facilities) to validate and verify accuracy of information.
  • Works with staff at long term care facility or provider office to correct discrepancies with orders, insurance information or diagnosis codes.
