About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, this role coordinates clerical and nursing home functions. This includes scheduling and collecting specimens from Nursing and Group Homes, coordinating offsite collection site staffing, computer registration, order entry, printing, charting, mailing, faxing, and filing of reports. The position is also responsible for the accessioning of Pathology/Cytology specimens and answering telephone inquiries. Duties include assuring accurate charges and billing information, employee competency testing, procedure manual reviews/updates, clerical staff training, ensuring timely submission of charts to coders, and reviewing nursing home monthly bills for accuracy. The role also performs waived testing (e.g., Influenza, Strep, Urine HCG), moderately complex testing (e.g., CBC, Urine Microscopic, KOH Prep), and understands, performs, and documents maintenance and quality control. Responsibilities include collecting blood specimens, preparing urine containers, ordering and receiving specimens in the computer, and adhering to infection control procedures. Clerical duties involve registration, checking charges, scanning, indexing, and printing. The position may also assist with courier routes, maintaining adequate stock, and keeping work areas clean. Responding to the telephone, orienting new staff, and maintaining good relations with patients, staff, and external offices are also key functions. This role is a full-time, 2nd shift position.

Requirements

  • 2 years clerical experience after 1 to 2 months on-the-job training.
  • Competency of components of laboratory procedures, as appropriate.
  • Good general condition.
  • Verbal ability to communicate with patients and other clientele instructions and other information.
  • Numerical ability to calculate by formula.
  • Form perception, finger dexterity to handle paper work and keyboards.
  • Dependable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs waived testing in a physician office setting to include but not limited to: Influenza, Strep, and Urine HCG testing.
  • Performs moderately complex testing to include but not limited to: CBC, Urine Microscopic, and KOH Prep.
  • Understands, performs, and documents maintenance and quality control as appropriate.
  • Collects blood specimens from in-patients and out-patients and places the specimens in appropriate depts.
  • Prints Outstanding Orders reports and responds appropriately to specimens listed on report.
  • Follows procedures as defined in the collection manual for patient identification and labeling of specimens.
  • Prepares urine containers for collection, including routine, 24-hour, etc. Instructs patients on method of collection.
  • Orders and receives specimens in computer, places appropriate barcode labels on specimens, and distributes specimens to appropriate testing departments.
  • Adheres to infection control procedures and isolation precautions.
  • Performs clerical duties, including registration, checking charges, scanning, indexing and printing.
  • Assists with courier route as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate stock. Requests supplies as needed and places stock in appropriate areas upon receipt.
  • Keeps work areas and collection tray clean and sanitary.
  • Responds to telephone appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Orients new staff to the departmental procedures and environment.
  • Maintains good relations with patients, medical staff, co-workers, other depts. and physicians offices/homes.
