About The Position

This role involves performing phlebotomy functions, including collecting and processing venipuncture and fingerstick specimens. The Lab Assistant II is responsible for managing lab orders, data entry, and tracking reference lab results. They will report test results according to protocols, immediately notifying physicians and nurses of critical results. Ensuring specimen integrity, maintaining good laboratory practices, and managing equipment and supplies are key aspects of this position. The role also includes processing samples accurately, performing waived and moderate complexity tests, collecting quality control data, and operating automated testing devices. Training and competency assessment for moderate and high complexity instruments, including on-site maintenance, are also required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or proof of higher education is required.
  • Minimum of one year as a phlebotomist.
  • At least one-year, full-time laboratory assistant experience in a hospital-based clinical laboratory required or successful completion of laboratory assistant training.

  • Two (2) years of phlebotomist experience preferred.
  • At least two years of under-graduate level education in a biologic science or other STEM level course work, such as biology or chemistry.
  • Some knowledge of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy functions including collecting and processing venipuncture and fingerstick specimen collections.
  • Correctly marks, transcribes, and checks lab orders and performs data entry into the lab computer.
  • Tracks, receives, and finalizes reference lab results.
  • Reports test results following protocols, alerting physicians and/or nurses immediately about critical results.
  • Ensures specimen integrity and good laboratory practice in collecting specimens and in ensuring appropriate sampling and record keeping.
  • Maintains equipment, instruments, and supplies as needed.
  • Processes samples with accuracy.
  • Tests and reports waived and moderate complexity tests such as automated Hematology and serology exams as provided by CLIA regulations, alerting physicians and/or other care givers of critical results.
  • Collects various lab data like QC, Temperatures, reagent Lot #’s for review by the Technical consultant or designee.
  • Introduces patient specimens onto complex rated automatic testing devices (i.e. random-access chemistry and immunochemistry instrument) that do not require specimen modification.
  • Maintains and replenishes reagents for all instrumentation.
  • Be trained, competency assessed, and responsible for on-site maintenance of moderate and high complexity instruments.
