About The Position

Perform venous puncture, skin punctures (for bleeding time only), finger sticks for in-patients and out-patients. Perform clerical duties as assigned. Process specimens and delivers to different sections of the laboratory. Perform messenger duties of specimens.

  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one year experience as a phlebotomist in a physician office or hospital setting preferred.
  • Phlebotomy registry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Properly identifies patients using two identifiers, neither of which is the room number.
  • Performs venepuncture using approved aseptic technique.
  • Appropriately labels specimens at the patient's bedside.
  • Times, dates, and initials all collected specimens.
  • Patient safety is assured before, during, and after blood collection.
  • Uses "unable to obtain" slips correctly.
  • Sorts requests correctly so that specimens are drawn on time.
  • Logs specimens into the laboratory computer correctly.
  • Delivers specimens to the correct section of the laboratory within expected time frame for type of specimen collected.
  • When working login, locates a phlebotomist within acceptable time frames to collect routine, timed and STAT orders.
  • When working login, promptly process incoming samples and distributes them within expected time frames.
  • Appropriately cancels orders for unreceived specimens after properly documenting the nurse notified.
  • Answers the telephones promptly and appropriately.
  • Charts patient reports accurately paying strict attention to medical record numbers and order of reports in the chart.
  • Times specimens correctly when logging them in.
  • Proficient in printing collection lists.
  • Uses copiers and fax machines properly.
  • Keeps area neat and clean.
  • Understands how to use the manual login system for back up in case of LIS or HIS downtime.
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt to young adult, adult, and geriatric patient populations by modifying interview techniques, identifying psychosocial, physical and educational needs specific to the patient's age.
  • Assist delivering specimens or blood products between the hospital and lab when urgently needed.
