The Laboratory Assistant I, Laboratory Services provides technical skills necessary to perform sample processing within the division and may perform essential phlebotomy duties as assigned. This role involves performing essential duties and competencies in all assignments necessary for phlebotomy or other clinical related duties. It also includes performing computer functions necessary for patient registration, blood collection, and specimen management. The assistant determines the acceptability of patient samples, prepares, stores, and transfers samples for testing, and performs quality control procedures on equipment. They assist in maintaining records of inventory, maintenance, and daily quality control. The role requires the ability to work independently within established guidelines, apply problem-solving skills, meet deadlines, and meet urgent patient, provider, and system needs. Depending on the location, duties may include blood collection procedures using skin puncture and venipuncture, and utilizing a company vehicle for business purposes after safety training. The assistant may also review and suggest revisions for policies and procedures, provide training and assess competency for staff, and communicate pertinent information to staff members, management, medical directors, and other divisions. Availability to cover different shifts if requested to guarantee patient care is also a requirement. The role adheres to all safety protocols in each laboratory area and internal controls and reporting structure. Related duties are performed as required.
