About The Position

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry seeks a Lab Administrator to oversee daily instructional laboratory operations as well as assist in a wide range of responsibilities. The Lab Administrator should have experience in wet-chemical techniques with the ability to prepare chemical reagents, knowledge of safe handling and disposal of common laboratory chemicals, and familiarity with equipment and instrumentation used routinely in undergraduate labs. In addition, the candidate should be detail oriented with strong organizational skills and be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and the general public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry or a science related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • At least 3 years comparable work experience.
  • Knowledgeable about chemistry and the preparation of solutions for undergraduate teaching lab courses.
  • Strong commitment to chemical safety, specifically with handling and disposal of chemical waste.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise, train, and coordinate student employees in a laboratory setting.
  • Team oriented and willing to work together with other staff members, faculty and students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry from an accredited educational institution.
  • Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the preparation and setting up of chemicals and equipment for the 100- and 200-level lab courses during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Courses include: General chemistry I and II; Organic chemistry I and II; Fundamentals of chemistry I and II (GOB).
  • Maintains updated and organized prep sheets.
  • Keeps teaching and prep lab spaces clean and organized.
  • Trains new TAs and instructors on teaching instrument usage.
  • Attends and assists lab TA meetings for courses that they have prepped and set up.
  • Aids the course Coordinators with lab course development and optimization.
  • Helps proctor lab practicals.
  • Administers TA evaluations for 100- through 400-level lab courses.
  • Along with Stockroom Manager, interview, hire, schedule, train, supervise, and assess Student Aides working the prep room and stockroom.
  • Encourages a culture of safety.
  • Manages safe handling and disposal of chemical waste generated in the research and teaching laboratories.
  • Assists in overseeing the annual lab cleanout.
  • Completes summer projects as needed.
  • Serves as departmental Fire Marshall.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the department Chair.
