Under the management of the Lab Manager or designee, the Lab Access Specialist performs technical and non-technical duties within the Laboratory. Duties include registering patients and entering laboratory test orders in the WellStar Hospital Information System (HIS) Patient Care system; contacting physicians about order issues; resolving customer service concerns; and notifying nurses and physicians of critical values while recording read-back information. Depending on the facility, the role may also include send-out duties. Additional work includes maintaining the standing order system in accordance with state regulations, assisting Patient Access Services with laboratory patient questions and pending logs, and staying current on HIS revisions and additions. The position requires calling physicians or nurses about notification and critical values within 30 minutes after results enter the Laboratory Information System queue. Staff record the person receiving the report, their title, and the call's time and date. If initial contact is unsuccessful, a message is left and a follow-up call is made 10–15 minutes later. All calls in the queue must be completed or handed off to a supervisor or designee before the employee leaves for the day. The specialist verifies patient demographics, registration, and physician office test orders; coordinates paperwork and specimen delivery with Laboratory and Pathology; enters laboratory orders, including standing orders and drop-off specimens; and partners with other departments to resolve workflow issues. Customer support duties include following AIDET standards, assisting physicians with testing questions, keeping work areas stocked and equipment operational, faxing eligible lab results according to policy, and assisting clinical laboratory or pathology staff as appropriate. If assigned send-out duties, the specialist prepares Meconium Drug Screens and Metabolic Screening tests for reference labs, scans reference-lab results into EPIC, charges out chain-of-custody drug screens, and contacts reference labs to follow up on problems. The employee also performs other assigned duties and complies with WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
