About The Position

Kennebec Valley Community College is seeking a Part-Time Occupational Therapy Laboratory Assistant for the Occupational Therapy Program in Bangor, ME. This contracted non-faculty position involves providing instruction and facilitating learning experiences for students to gain entry-level OTA competencies. The role requires assessing student readiness, logging competency engagement, and maintaining effective communication with OTA faculty and the Program Director. Responsibilities include supervising lab activities, ensuring safety, maintaining lab cleanliness, and evaluating student skills through practical assessments.

Requirements

  • Applicant must be credentialed as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) or Occupational Therapist (OT).
  • Must be able to demonstrate competence in knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to support specific course learning, such as human development, activity analysis, therapeutic use of self, cultural humility, transfers, treatment modalities and interventions commonly associated with various populations treated by occupational practitioners, and documentation.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Must be knowledgeable about methods for student evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and facilitate learning experiences to assist students in gaining entry-level OTA competencies.
  • Provide a forum for students to experience and gain skills required of an OTA student.
  • Engage in weekly supervision/planning meetings with other Lab assistants, Faculty, and Program Director.
  • Maintain attendance of students and log student competency engagement.
  • Assess students for readiness and expected level of competence before final sign-off.
  • Provide sign-off for students demonstrating expected skill and knowledge performance.
  • Assess student performance in open/competency lab activities to provide OTA Faculty with information to impact student learning needs.
  • Check in with OTA faculty weekly to ensure consistency between course learning lab/theory and open lab.
  • Inform OTA faculty about student issues, learning needs, level of participation, and attendance that may impact student progress.
  • Inform OTA faculty regarding lab assistant schedule changes, needs for resources/requests, and assistance.
  • Maintain effective communication with OTA Faculty.
  • Understand lab policies and maintain established lab rules, as well as develop specific rules per each lab to maintain safety.
  • Supervise learning lab activities, including interpersonal interactions, and provide necessary feedback to students.
  • Supervise all open/competency lab activities, including interpersonal interactions, and provide necessary feedback to students.
  • Participate in lab practicals, as contracted or specified.
  • Evaluate students at the end of the semester for lab skills competency through a final lab practical.
  • Maintain safety in the lab at all times and ensure the OTA lab is clean after each lab.
  • Communicate with the OTA Program Director regarding needed lab supplies.
