About The Position

This position oversees the inmate/detainee worker program in a correctional facility kitchen. The Kitchen Officer is responsible for training inmates/detainees on their duties, including sanitation and food preparation, and supervising their work to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely. This role involves managing food deliveries, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, and adjusting menus as needed. The position requires strong communication, organizational, and time management skills, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with experience in food preparation management or correctional/law enforcement. Experience in supervision is preferred. The role involves physical demands such as sitting, walking, standing, lifting, and exposure to varying temperatures and humidity.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
  • Wage-earning experience in correctional, commercial, or institutional food preparation service management or eighteen months of correctional custody or law enforcement experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Nice To Haves

  • Correctional or institutional food service experience preferred.
  • Experience in the supervision of employees or offenders preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees inmate/detainee worker program.
  • Creates and implements orientation forms.
  • Trains and orients inmate/detainee workers on their required duties, including proper sanitation and hand washing procedures.
  • Assigns daily kitchen tasks to inmate/detainee workers.
  • Supervises inmate/detainee workers to ensure tasks are done in an organized and timely manner.
  • Delivers verbal direction and warnings to inmate/detainee workers when needed.
  • Prepares, assists, or instructs inmate/detainee labor in the preparation of a variety of food items in accordance with departmental work production standards, standardized recipes, and work instructions.
  • Follows assigned facility housekeeping and safety practices in all preparation, oversight, and serving of correctional facility meals.
  • Checks in deliveries, ensuring proper items are delivered in a timely manner and food is at correct temperatures.
  • Stocks incoming food and supplies in their proper places, including immediate stocking of frozen and perishable items.
  • Stocks all other foods and supplies within an hour of delivery.
  • Compiles weekly kitchen inventory.
  • Records and maintains information in the computer inventory system.
  • Maintains a current physical inventory of all food and supplies that need to be ordered.
  • Orders groceries and other kitchen supplies.
  • Adjusts menu if needed due to increased cost of food.
