About The Position

Gobind Sarvar School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Kirtan Teacher to inspire students through Sikh devotional music and foster a lifelong appreciation of Gurbani, Sikh values, and cultural heritage. This position is ideal for an individual who combines strong musical abilities with a genuine passion for teaching and mentoring children. The successful candidate will deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction in Gurbani Kirtan, harmonium, and tabla to students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. They will create a positive and respectful learning environment where students develop musical skills, confidence, discipline, and a deeper connection to Sikh traditions. Working collaboratively with school leadership and teaching staff, the Kirtan Teacher will prepare students for school assemblies, Gurpurabs, Vaisakhi celebrations, concerts, and other special events while supporting the school's mission of nurturing academic excellence, spiritual growth, and strong character. The ideal candidate is patient, enthusiastic, organized, and committed to creating meaningful learning experiences that encourage every student to grow both musically and personally.

Requirements

  • Diploma, Certificate, Bachelor's degree, or equivalent training in Music, Sikh Music (Gurbani Kirtan), Music Education, or a related field is preferred.
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (required).
  • Previous experience teaching Gurbani Kirtan, harmonium, tabla, or music instruction is preferred.
  • Experience working with children in an educational, religious, or community setting is considered an asset.
  • Experience preparing students for performances, assemblies, or cultural events is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Gurbani Kirtan, Sikh musical traditions, and Sikh values.
  • Proficiency in harmonium and the ability to teach students effectively.
  • Proficiency in tabla is considered a strong asset.
  • Excellent vocal skills and understanding of Gurbani pronunciation.
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging Kirtan lessons for students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.
  • Teach Gurbani Kirtan, including proper pronunciation, melody, rhythm, and basic raags where appropriate.
  • Provide instruction in harmonium, tabla, and vocal techniques using age-appropriate teaching methods.
  • Foster an appreciation and understanding of Sikh values, Gurbani, and Sikh musical traditions.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, and interests of students.
  • Create engaging and meaningful learning experiences that encourage confidence, discipline, teamwork, and spiritual growth.
  • Integrate creative teaching strategies and educational resources to enhance student learning and participation.
  • Prepare students for school assemblies, Gurpurabs, Vaisakhi celebrations, concerts, and other special events.
  • Monitor and assess student participation, musical development, and progress throughout the school year.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and student progress documentation.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents, as appropriate.
  • Encourage students to achieve their individual learning goals while fostering confidence and a love for Kirtan.
  • Support students requiring additional guidance or individualized instruction.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
  • Promote respectful behaviour, discipline, responsibility, and cooperation among students.
  • Implement classroom management strategies consistent with school policies and expectations.
  • Ensure the proper care, storage, and maintenance of musical instruments and classroom resources.
  • Collaborate with the Principal, school administration, teachers, and support staff to support student learning and school initiatives.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development, and school planning activities.
  • Build positive and respectful relationships with students, parents, guardians, and the wider school community.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student participation, progress, and upcoming performances.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
  • Participate in professional development and continuous learning opportunities.
  • Support school events, field trips, extracurricular activities, and community initiatives as required.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Principal that are consistent with the position.
