About The Position

Kindergarten teachers are responsible for providing direct instruction to students and maintaining an environment conducive to learning. This role supports the mission of Joplin Schools and the value of education. The teacher is expected to become familiar with, enforce, and follow all applicable Board policies and regulations, administrative procedures, directions from district administrators and supervisors, and state and federal laws. They must properly supervise students, obey safety rules, care for school property, and maintain courteous and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, other district employees, and the public. Effective communication with supervisors, staff, the school district, and the community is essential. The role requires providing excellence in customer service, complying with privacy rights, safeguarding confidential information, reacting to change productively, and receiving constructive criticism. Active participation in professional development is expected to gain necessary skills. All official business must be conducted professionally and timely, utilizing district technology. Punctuality for work and meetings is required, along with maintaining accurate records and filing systems. Problem-solving using math functions and interpreting documents like work orders and safety rules are also part of the job.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students by creating learning experiences that make the aspects of subject matter meaningful and engaging.
  • Understand the central concepts, structures, and tools of inquiry of the discipline(s).
  • Understand how students learn, develop and differ in their approaches to learning.
  • Provide learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners and support the intellectual, social and personal development of all students.
  • Exhibit an understanding of the fundamental skills required for kindergarten success.
  • Develop daily lesson plans aligned with state standards and District curriculum maps, informed by student data.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies and resources to encourage students' critical thinking, problem-solving and performance skills.
  • Create a learning environment that encourages active engagement in learning, positive social interaction and self-motivation.
  • Model effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques with students, colleagues and families to foster active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction in the classroom.
  • Understand and use formative and summative assessment strategies to assess the learner's progress and use both classroom and local assessment data to plan ongoing instruction.
  • Engage in Kindergarten Screening opportunities, by administering, analyzing and reporting findings.
  • Convey clearly to parents about transitional kindergarten program expectations and qualifications.
  • Participate in regular, meaningful data conversations through collaborative teams.
  • Monitor the performance of each student and devise instruction to enable students to grow and develop, making adequate academic progress.
  • Treat others with respect and civility, values diversity, and resolves conflicts professionally.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally, individually and collectively, in order to improve learning for all students.
  • Participate in building, grade level and subject area committees.
  • Complete and submit forms and required reports in a timely manner.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and other educational concerns.
  • Participate as a member of an IEP team, 504 team, or other student assistance teams as requested.
  • Implement plans as written.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, discrimination and harassments as directed by Board policy and applicable law.
  • Prepare lesson plans for use by a substitute teacher prior to absences occurring.
  • Other duties as assigned.
