Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years’ kiln and/or furnace fireman experience.
  • May require forklift certification.
  • Intermediate language and math skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Follows approved work instructions and established departmental procedures for efficient use of kiln and/or furnace capacity under minimal supervision.
  • Monitors, takes incremental readings and maintains firing profiles in kiln and/or furnaces; includes vacuum furnaces, periodic and tunnel kilns; determines correct burner and kiln and/or furnace pressure settings for optimal firing.
  • Performs kiln and/or furnace control management which may include controller set-up with high degree of accuracy utilizing appropriate computer software.
  • Adjusts firing profiles in kilns and/or kilns including vacuum furnaces, periodic furnaces or kilns and tunnel kilns; adjusts instrumentation and sensor devices as needed per Measurement Standards.
  • Checks kiln and/or furnace equipment in operation during shift to ensure it is in optimal working order; troubleshooting all firing process abnormalities and implementing solutions or notifying appropriate personnel of malfunctions.
  • May supervise more severe kiln and/or furnace wreck recoveries ensuring a safe entry environment.
  • May be responsible for gathering and documenting air and gas data for reporting purposes.
  • May perform routine maintenance operations on kiln and/or furnaces, refractory (including grinding), and on kiln and/or furnace furniture (including rebuilding/re-leveling on furniture system).
  • Responsible for reviewing and recommending changes, if appropriate, on all departmental work instructions.
  • Willingly provides training/ cross-training in equipment and process operations to effectively ensure employees are in compliance of production, departmental and safety standards.
  • Actively participates or leads department meetings.
  • May assist in the selection of new equipment.
  • May be responsible for coordinating firing schedules in coordination with production personnel.
  • May assume supervisor responsibilities in the absence of departmental leader.
  • Assists in any and all areas as assigned.
  • May work any and all shifts/days as required including on-call rotation.
