About The Position

This role is primarily clinical, focusing on patient care and hospital maintenance within a fast-paced veterinary hospital setting. The Veterinary Assistant will support veterinarians and technicians with medical procedures, patient monitoring, and administering treatments. Additionally, the role involves maintaining hospital sanitation, stocking supplies, and interacting with clients. While the focus is clinical, assistance with client service and front desk duties is expected as needed. Teamwork, communication, and adherence to hospital policies and safety protocols are crucial.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependability, attention to detail, and ability to follow instructions
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Ability to safely restrain animals as needed
  • Tolerance for exposure to noise, odors, and animal bodily fluids
  • Maintain confidentiality of client and patient information
  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, and compliance standards

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with animals (veterinary, shelter, kennel, or similar setting)
  • Veterinary assistant training or certification

Responsibilities

  • Safely handle, restrain, and comfort patients during examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Prepare exam rooms, treatment areas, and surgical spaces before and after use.
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with medical procedures as directed.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients and report changes or concerns to the medical team.
  • Administer medications and treatments as permitted by training and state regulations.
  • Accurately document patient care activities as instructed.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms, treatment areas, kennels, and equipment according to hospital protocols.
  • Maintain laundry, waste disposal, and biohazard procedures.
  • Stock and organize supplies, ensuring availability of necessary materials.
  • Assist with equipment care and basic maintenance.
  • Provide compassionate, professional assistance to clients during visits.
  • Support client flow by escorting patients, answering basic questions, and relaying information to appropriate team members.
  • Demonstrate empathy and professionalism, especially during emotionally sensitive situations.
  • Answer phones professionally, schedule appointments, and route calls appropriately.
  • Provide courteous, compassionate service to clients in person and over the phone.
  • Assist with client check-in/check-out and relay messages to the medical team.
  • Support front desk coverage during busy periods or staffing gaps.
  • Communicate basic hospital information and appointment flow as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with veterinarians, technicians, CSRs, and management.
  • Follow established SOPs, safety protocols, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in training, meetings, and continuing education as required.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client and patient information.
  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, and compliance standards.
  • Represent the hospital professionally to clients and the community.
