About The Position

Salina Veterinary Hospital, located in Salina, KS, is a premier full-service veterinary facility with over 50 years of experience in animal care, specializing in small animals like dogs and cats. The Kennel Assistant role reports to the Practice Manager and is responsible for the care of patients visiting for grooming and/or boarding. This role ensures the boarding area is clean and safe by maintaining cages, runs, and ward areas, and managing laundry. Responsibilities include walking, feeding, and administering medication under supervision. The position also involves daily clinic cleaning and requires the ability to work independently. Key competencies include patience, compassion, collaboration, teamwork, communication, active listening, and a focus on client satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Ability to work on weekends as required
  • Previous veterinary experience preferred
  • Ability to lift patients up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to lift patients over 25 pounds with assistance
  • Practices OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE
  • Must be available weekends and holidays
  • Candidate must be able to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Provides care for patients visiting the practice for grooming and/or boarding.
  • Ensures patients are admitted, noting client instructions, contact information, and pick-up times.
  • Accurately records patient information, including feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior.
  • Observes patient's appearance and activity for general physical condition and signs of illness.
  • Appropriately handles and restrains patients as needed.
  • Walks patients several times a day for exercise and elimination.
  • Provides special food and liquids as required.
  • Ensures patients are clean and have been checked by a Technician/Doctor prior to discharge.
  • Ensures patients have all personal property upon exit.
  • Ensures cages and patients are properly numbered and identified.
  • Stores and identifies personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes).
  • Regularly cleans, disinfects, and maintains kennels, cages, runs, and stalls to ensure cleanliness and odor control.
  • Performs general cleaning in other areas of the hospital to control the spread of disease.
  • Washes and sterilizes water and food bowls.
  • Launders and dries towels and blankets.
  • Walks hospital grounds regularly, cleaning trash and stool material.
  • Empties trash throughout the practice and grounds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
