Kelp Forest Scientific Diving Internship

Monterey Bay Aquarium•Monterey, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Monterey Bay Aquarium seeks two enthusiastic and motivated interns to support research into the recovery of California kelp forests. The research aims to improve understanding of kelp forest recovery mechanisms and inform climate-ready conservation action and management planning. Work will be conducted primarily along the Monterey Peninsula and in Carmel Bay, California. Interns will assist with field observations and data collection through scientific scuba diving, as well as laboratory assays. Scuba diving is an essential function. The anticipated time allocation is 70% in the field and 30% in the laboratory, subject to summer research needs. The internship runs for six months, from February 2027 through July 2027, with exact dates flexible. It requires three full days per week, approximately 24 hours per week, with no weekends. Interns must complete a project-based report in the form of an oral presentation at the end of the internship. The hourly rate is $18.00 USD.
