About The Position

The KDOC Instructor provides high-quality instruction to incarcerated adult learners at Lansing Correctional Facility. This position supports students in developing foundational academic skills, preparing for the GED exam, and progressing toward educational and career pathways that support successful reentry. The instructor collaborates closely with KDOC staff, Adult Education Navigators, Career Navigators, and facility partners to ensure seamless program delivery. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position located at The Lansing Correctional facility.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education, literacy, social sciences, or a related field.
Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching adult learners, GED preparation, or K–12 instruction.
Must pass all KDOC background checks and security clearances.

Unofficial transcripts are required for all Adjunct faculty and Faculty positions.

Responsibilities

Delivers high-quality instruction in adult basic education and GED preparation.
Provides engaging, differentiated instruction in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies aligned with GED standards.
Assesses student skill levels and develops individualized learning plans.
Uses a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs, including students with interrupted education.
Prepares students for GED testing through targeted lessons, practice assessments, and skill-building activities.
Maintains a structured, supportive, and safe classroom environment consistent with KDOC expectations.
Conducts ongoing assessments to track academic growth and readiness for GED testing.
Documents attendance, progress, competencies, and instructional activities in Athena and other required systems.
Maintains accurate case notes and updates student records promptly.
Provides timely feedback to students and collaborates with Adult Education Navigators to support student goals.
Identifies students ready for GED subtests and coordinates testing schedules.
Administers TABE or other required assessments following approved procedures.
Ensures testing integrity and compliance with KDOC and testing vendor policies.
Reviews test results with students and adjust instruction accordingly.
Collaborate with Adult Education Navigators, counselors, and reentry staff to support students' long-term education and employment pathways.
Helps students understand how GED completion connects to vocational training, apprenticeships, and postsecondary opportunities.
Encourages students to explore next-step education options after earning their high school equivalency.
Provides documentation of student competencies for inclusion in reentry plans.
Coordinates with Adult Education Navigators when students transfer to another facility.
Provides necessary academic documentation to ensure uninterrupted learning.
Supports prerelease planning by sharing educational progress and recommended next steps with reentry staff.
Works with facility staff to schedule classes, testing sessions, and tutoring support.
Ensures classroom materials, technology, and testing resources are used appropriately and securely.
Supports tablet-based learning and digital instructional tools as required.
Communicates regularly with facility leadership to ensure smooth program operations.
Attends monthly facility meetings to share updates and coordinate with KDOC staff.
Participates in statewide education network meetings, either in person or virtually.
Attends quarterly meetings with KDOC central office staff, facility staff, and reentry navigators.
Engages in professional development related to adult education, corrections education, trauma-informed teaching, and reentry best practices.
Shares new learning with colleagues to strengthen instructional quality.
Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be updated at any time at the discretion of management.
