About The Position

The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a K-12 education reporting intern for the fall semester. This 12-week internship is designed for students who want to strengthen their reporting skills, build an impressive portfolio of clips, and gain hands-on experience in a supportive, digital-first newsroom. The successful candidate will be working alongside seasoned reporters in a local newsroom.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program at Indiana University or another area university.
  • At least one year into their college studies.
  • Interested in pursuing journalism as a career.
  • Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills through their cover letter and writing samples.
  • A desire to ask questions, find answers, and clearly communicate information.
  • Critical-thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to work with data.
  • The ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
  • An interest in SEO and innovative storytelling techniques.
  • Comfort taking photos and shooting digital video.
  • Applications without a cover letter and writing samples (published clips or classroom assignments) will not be considered.
  • Valid driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Cover school board meetings and education-related events.
  • Follow students and teachers during classroom projects.
  • Analyze data to explore how area schools are performing.
  • Report on community, education, and student-related trends.
  • Produce daily stories while developing deeper enterprise reporting projects.
