About The Position

Provides sports instruction and leadership to student athletes of Cary Academy. Coaches must perform a wide range of duties in order to fulfill their coaching obligation. These duties include, but are not limited to: Treat every team and community member in a fair, respectful and non-prejudiced manner. Coach and instruct the team in the proper fundamental skills with the goal of raising every athlete’s technical skill to such a level that he or she is capable of competing against opponents and advancing the athletic program. Ensure that team members behave in an appropriate, responsible and sportsmanlike manner at all times. Enforce all Cary Academy, NCISAA, TISAC and CAMS conference rules regarding scholastic eligibility requirements, practice start dates and off season workouts. Arrange and/or attend sports meetings, parent meetings and end of season receptions or banquets. Establish, publish, and enforce reasonable team rules that follow the policies of the Cary Academy Athletic Department. These rules must be given in writing to the team and the players’ parents at a preseason meeting and followed with an athlete and parent signature. Prior to such distribution, the rules must be reviewed and approved by the Athletic Director. Submit TEAM ROSTERS to the Athletic Director and Athletic Administrative Assistant within seven days (five school days) of the first practice. There are to be no additions to the roster once it is submitted without prior approval from the Athletic Director. As 10, 11, and 12 graders may use participation on an interscholastic team as a way to fulfill Physical Education requirements, it is imperative that the Athletic Director be informed immediately if a player quits or is removed from a team. Their graduation from Cary Academy may depend on that information. Communicate with the Athletic Director on a regular basis. Record your work hours in UltiPro each day. Arrange practice times with the Varsity Coach of your sport and the Athletic Director. Issue, care for, maintain, and collect all equipment and uniforms. To ensure a smooth process, establish an inventory of all such equipment. Set up and break down practice and game venues, making sure all equipment is stored in a secure fashion. Ensure all practice and game venues are in a safe playing condition and are in accordance with NFHS rules. Report ALL injuries (student, employee or guest) to the Athletic Trainer within 12 hours. Injuries requiring more than basic first aid must be reported as soon as possible and an incident report must be completed with the assistance of the Athletic Trainer. Never leave a practice unsupervised. Do not permit your team to begin practice before your arrival. Head Coaches should ride/drive with the team to and from all contests. Coaches are responsible for the team at all times. Select qualified student managers and instruct them in their responsibilities and expected conduct. Maintain positive lines of communication with athletes and parents. Such communication should include but is not limited to: weekly practice/game schedules, game recaps, cancelations and team bonding activities or celebrations. Cancelled practices or changes in venue should be communicated to parents, players, Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers and Athletic Administrative Assistant no later than 2:00pm of the day of the scheduled event. Practices cancelled after 2:00pm will require coach supervision until all players are picked up from Cary Academy. Select a “team parent” to assist you with team needs. Examples may include: driving a bus or transporting students to games; organizing an email distribution list, helping organize game snacks/tailgate events; assisting with end of the season gatherings; and securing needed volunteers. In no way shall a team parent act as a coach's "stand in". Supervise locker room activities and facilities. Check the locker room for uniforms, running showers or misbehaving athletes before leaving the facility. Establish and adhere to a definite time for termination of practice. JV and MS practices are to be no longer than 90 minutes; Varsity no longer than 2 hours. Coaches are expected to supervise players following all practices and games/contests until their ride arrives; no player should be left unsupervised. If a parent has not arrived within 15 minutes of the practice/game end time, the player may be handed off to security. The coach and security personnel should notify the parents of the student’s location. Habitual lateness in picking up athletes should be reported to the Athletic Director. Report game scores and recaps immediately following each athletic event. Attend any and all TISAC, CAMS, or NCISAA meetings that a Coach is expected to attend. Complete Post Season Procedures as outlined in the Coaches Handbook. Each Coach shall schedule a conference with the Athletic Director following the final contest of the season to evaluate the program, evaluate the coach’s performance, submit final reports, return keys, and return outstanding equipment and supplies.
