About The Position

The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for a Teacher of Language Arts at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, ME. This is a full-time, year-round, 224-day position with a primary purpose to teach Language Arts to the youth residing at the facility. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • Maine ELA Teaching Certification (100) as issued by the Department of Education.

  • Knowledge of: Modern Juvenile security principles and practices.
  • Ability to: Teach Language Arts at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses.

  • Ability to: Work with and manage at-risk youth.

  • Evaluate student academic and social growth.
  • Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
  • Maintain student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations.
  • Assist students in the development of desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills.
  • Prepare lesson plans in accordance with curriculum.
  • Meet with and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.
