About The Position

This position is within Bell County Juvenile Services and focuses on facility operations. The role involves fulfilling duties as directed by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) and the United States Department of Justice, adhering to policies including the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), Texas Family Code, Bell County Employee Handbook, and Bell County Juvenile Services policies and procedures. The technician will work with a diverse population and report critical situations to the Area Manager. They will provide coverage in pre and post-adjudication facilities, assist probation officers with crisis management and referrals, and be accountable for data collection for reporting and program assessment. Responsibilities also include monitoring grievances, assisting with risk and needs assessments, providing transportation to treatment facilities, maintaining professional appearance and behavior, addressing resident behavioral issues, and potentially being moved to other positions within the department. The role may also involve other duties assigned by the Department Chain of Command.

Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have no disqualifying criminal history.
  • Have no criminal history as described in §344.410(a) unless TJJD has reviewed it and determined the person is not ineligible for certification due to the criminal history.
  • Have acquired a high school diploma or its equivalent as specified in TAC§344.204.
  • Never have had any type of certification revoked by TJJD.
  • Complete the training required by TAC§344.
  • Pass the certification exam to be completed after employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill all duties related to his/her assignment as directed by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the United States Department of Justice.
  • Adhere to all policies in accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), Texas Family Code, Bell County Employee Handbook, and Bell County Juvenile Services policies and procedures.
  • Keep the Area Manager advised of all critical situations that may arise.
  • Provide coverage in the Bell County Juvenile Services pre and post adjudication facilities when/as directed by the Area Manager or Department Administration.
  • Assist the probation officer in providing crisis management to the juvenile and family as needed.
  • Accountable for data collection for the purposes of tracking program quality, assessing program effectiveness, and completion of all TJJD and departmental reports.
  • Monitors grievances and appeals for detention, post-adjudication facility, and the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program.
  • Assist the probation officer with assessing risks and needs (by validated screening instruments) and makes appropriate community resource referrals, maintains contact with outside agencies related to referrals.
  • Provides transportation to treatment facilities or other care as required or directed by the Unit Supervisor.
  • Always maintain his/her appearance and appropriate professional behavior.
  • Address behavioral issues/concerns of residents to ensure compliance, to include assisting staff during any situation that requires the use of Handle with Care and the department approved behavior management program.
  • May be moved to other positions within the department as necessary with or without notice.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Department Chain of Command to include but not limited to the Court, the Supervisor, Assistant Director, or Chief Juvenile Probation Officer/Director.
